Hammer Klavier Trio

BORIS NETSVETAEV (p), PHIL STEEN (b) und KAI BUSSENIUS (ds).

They have the features necessary to give this so complex and traditional trio setting an original character: they are devoted to the music as a whole, they are virtuosos on their instruments, they are young and at the same time have collected a huge wealth of experience. And … they are friends.

Since the founding of the Hammer Klavier Trio in 2002, their individual personalities miraculously melt together when they head to the improvisational journey with an interlude of Prokofiev, an African folk song or an ostinato funk groove. Their music is always one thing:

“Straight-Ahead Jazz, somewhere between Monk and Bad Plus.“ —Jazzthetik, November 2008

The “Hammer Klavier Trio” (HKT) plays acoustic and electric, structured and free, experimental and traditional.

The debut album “Now I know who shot JFK” was released 2008 at the Swiss Jazz label Altrisuoni. A second publication, which will also bring out the electric sound of the trio, is in preparation and planned for 2011. Stay tuned!

Hammer Klavier Trio: Rocket In The Pocket

Read "Rocket In The Pocket" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Power piano trios willing to plug-in are not the norm in jazz, but Hamburg's Hammer Klavier Trio, thankfully, never received that message. The music that they present completely erases the dividing lines between traditional piano trios, hard hitting threesomes like The Bad Plus, and genre-blending Euro-stars like the late Esbjörn Svensson Trio. This band has all of that in their aural make-up, but they don't fit neatly into any of those categories. Rocket In The Pocket contains ...

Hammer Klavier TrioMiles' CafeNew York, NYJune 10, 2011 While the exchange rate between Euros and dollars fluctuates, the exchange rate between American jazz acts and European jazz acts has always favored the Stars and Stripes. Although it might be a bit of a generalization, it wouldn't be unfair to say that European audiences, by and large, tend to welcome new jazz from America with open arms, while American jazz audiences are tougher to crack ...

Das Hammerklavier Trio: Now I Know Who Shot J.F.K.

Read "Now I Know Who Shot J.F.K." reviewed by Matthew Miller

Pianist Boris Netsvetaev's Das Hammerklavier Trio (archaic German for Grand Piano Trio) is a throwback in name only. The fleet, youthful ensemble is deeply entrenched in jazz's 21st century incarnations, embracing genre-hopping styles, global influences and a devotion to collective freedom. The group is also aptly named in that Netsvetaev's piano occupies the foreground for the vast majority of Now I Know Who Shot J.F.K., unleashing eighth-note runs and thundering fourths over the nimble, more reserved rhythmic underpinnings of bassist ...
