Hat: Twins

Read "Twins" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Read "Local HAT" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Too much of it might be undesirable but a little psychedelia is good thing. The Catalan-based group simply called HAT offers it up on Local HAT, with its unique blend of modern jazz that touches on everything from abstract, rock, avant-garde, catchy pop-influenced hooks, and whatever else spawns from its richly diverse music environment surrounding Barcelona, Spain. The group's leaders--guitarist Jordi Matas and keyboardist Sergi Sirvent--have collaborated in various works with forward-thinking momentum, as heard in Matas' ...

Hat: Hi Ha

Read "Hi Ha" reviewed by Ian Patterson

What is immediately striking about the music presented on Hi Ha by the youthful Catalan quartet Hat, is just how original it is. This is in no small part due to the influence of Sergi Sirvent, who contributes the lion's share of the tunes and plays piano in a style which is tremendously personal.

The title track opens with skipping brushes and a chittering bass which lays the foundation for restrained solos by guitarist Jordi Matas followed by ...

Impex's Getz/Gilberto; Plus a Chat With Abey Fonn

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

This month marks the 60th anniversary of Getz/Gilberto's release by Verve Records. The revolutionary bossa nova album recorded in 1963 and produced by Creed Taylor—with the inclusion of Astrud Gilberto singing The Girl From Ipanema and Corcovado—turned the infectious Brazilian beat into a global phenomenon with the young-adult market. In America, the Beatles and other British Invasion artists by then owned the teen market, and Al Hirt, Percy Faith, Ray Conniff and other easy-listening artists owned the more senior market. ...

Adamo Delivers Lyrics In A Style That Would Make Soul Train’s Don Cornelius Smile

Source: All About Jazz

“Soul Glide” is the single from Tony Adamo’s upcoming album of the same name, and by the sound of it, you might not need your ears as much as dancing shoes to appreciate. Adamo delivers lyrics in a style that would make Soul Train’s Don Cornelius smile, and which back in the day would make people line up to try out their latest dance steps. The funkified team of Mike Clark/dr, Richie Goods/b, Rob Sudduth/ts, Chris Pimentel/g and John McKay/org ...

Bill Evans: Here's That Rainy Day

Bill Evans: Here's That Rainy Day

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I've always loved Bill Evans's solo interpretation of Here's That Rainy Day from Alone in 1968. He opens with enormous sensitivity and delivers a measured ballad reading, followed by rising intensity and swing as the tempo quickens. The master take that appears on the album never fails to thrill me. Yet despite his beauty, Evans didn't bother to hold onto it like some other songs. Perhaps he felt that the Alone version was as good as he was ever going ...

Johnny Dankworth: What the Dickens!

Johnny Dankworth: What the Dickens!

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

One of Britain's finest jazz musicians, arrangers and composers was Johnny Dankworth. The alto saxophonist and big band leader was best known here as the husband of singer Cleo Laine. The pair married in 1958 and made the rounds of variety shows for years. But Dankworth was a giant in his own right and one of the U.K.'s most inventive arranger-composers. His recording career began in 1944 and by the late 1940s he was recording bebop. Once the 12-inch LP ...
