Hiske Jeltine Oosterwijk

‘Inhale a peaceful breeze, then exhale the love, calm.’

́This is a sentence out of one of the lyrics I wrote to Alex Sipiagin’s music. It’s my vision towards singing. To me, singing means relaxation and pure fun. I breath in and every note and sound that I create, make, comes with love. When I sing I want to touch the audience, inspire them, entertain them. To make that my job is a privilege, it’s the most beautiful job you can imagine. ́

Hiske Oosterwijk (1989) is a jazz vocalist, born and raised in Friesland. She started already with music in her early years, but was back than, more focused on theater. ́Singing songs I enjoyed, but mostly in my bedroom ́. In high school she joined the music class and slowly discovered her passion for the voice, for singing. What seemed like a nice hobby, turned out to be the dream to make it her job. Hiske studied her bachelor (graduated 2014) and master degree (graduated 2018) in jazz vocals at the Prins Claus Conservatory, Groningen. She stood in the finals of the Dutch Vocalist Concours 2013.

´Hiske is voice-technically very strong and this appears in her performance and repertoire, where you can see a flexible and versatile vocalist´ - Leeuwarder Courant.

Her interest in music is very wide, but she feels her best in jazz, chansons and pop/soul. She writes her own compositions and especially loves to write lyrics. ́To create a story, to share my own story or the puzzle to find the right words to someone else ́s story, to me, is such a fascinating and beautiful thing to do ́. Hiske has participated in many projects, background choirs and did a lot of studio work. At the moment she’s working together with the great trumpet player Alex Sipiagin in the New Path Quintet, with whom she toured in many different countries and with whom she released two albums, the third is on it s way. ´I’ve experienced a driven, very motivated and hard working musician. Always eager to learn and grow to a higher musical level´ - Alex Sipiagin. Next to this she has her own band, EVA, with whom she stood in the finals of The Records – Keep an eye Foundation 2014 and with whom she won the 2017 Concours de la Chanson. EVA stands for Embrasser, Vivre, Aimer. Meaning embrace, live, love. ́We embrace music and each other. We live music, we live for music. But most of all we love music and that ́s what we want to share with the audience, with you! ́ EVA is a multinational band, French jazz/rock, founded in January 2014. Solid grooves, a wide dynamic range and lyrical melodies are keywords for the music. With EVA, she recently release her first album on the label Harmonia Mundi. ́The songs on the album represent what we stand for as a band, as in ́Chanson de l ́amour ́. But also, it tells things about who I am. Music life can be lonely sometimes and you would like to have someone to share your stories with, but this person is not there.. ́Tu n ́es pas la ́. Or for example ́Mon rêve ́ is the story about my dreams for music, how music embraces me like silk. Or ́Je pense ́ explains random things about me. Like ́I think, I do stuff, I am a bit crazy, I dream ́.

Makar Kashitsyn: Jazz Animals

Read "Jazz Animals" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Straight outta St. Petersburg, Rainy Days Records has done a splendid job of documenting some of the strongest emerging voices in Russian jazz, starting with drummer Sasha Mashin's superb Outsidethebox in 2018. Mashin's debut release belied his youth with an assured poise and dynamic vision, and here we have yet another wonderful first outing: alto saxophonist Makar Kashitsyn's Jazz Animals. In keeping with the spirit of this no-longer-fledgling label, Kashitsyn showcases the kinetic energy and breadth of concept Rainy Days ...

'Oosterwijk’s keenly observed stories and ruminations, delivered in well-turned English, French and Frisian. You could describe it as a Jazz-Alternative-Singer/Songwriter-Art Song hybrid, but the result is really, as Duke Ellington liked to say, beyond category.' - Ted Panken
