Album Description

After reading Emanuel Carnevali's autobiography, with the English title “The First God”, I decided to write a large- format composition in tribute to this Italian poet who emigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. The narrative of the poem, the dark vision of its environment, the intense and uncompromising way it looks at life, touched me deeply. This tribute to Emanuel Carnevali is a musical composition that echoes the poet's text through leitmotivs and recalls the mood of the poem through its atmosphere and textures. It was for me the opportunity to integrate into the composition the "classical" influences (Ravel, Bartok) with those of contemporary Jazz (Maria Schneider, Christine Jensen), which allowed me to go beyond the habits of jazz and pop writing, and enrich the arrangement with counterpoints and giving a much stronger place to the melody. The instrumentation contrasts with regular Jazz habits: in addition to the rhythm section and a tenor saxophone, a bass clarinet, an English horn, and an alto flute were added. ​ The composition thereby transmits to the listener the experience of the feelings expressed in Emanuel Carnevali's text, from the chaos of New York, to the dark bucolicism of his native Italy.
