Album Description

During the wonderful but all too short time known as the Swing Era, band leaders, jazz musicians, and singers were superstars. They played great music in ballrooms packed with dancers from coast to coast. Each band had its own signature sound and repertoire. But every band also had a few things in common. You had to have great instrumentalists to play the charts just the way the band was supposed to sound, and great jazz soloists to liven up each arrangement. Everyone loves to be told a story in song, so a top vocalist was a must. And you had to Swing! Whether you were playing a jazz riff, or a sentimental love song, it still had to swing. Every band had a book of great tunes for people to dance and listen to. You had to have a collection of catchy riffs- songs with snippets of melody that repeat and get stuck in your head and are great vehicles for jazz improvisation. And wonderful vocal numbers- usually about love- that were written by the composers of the Great American Songbook. This collection of songs by the Boilermaker Jazz Band brings to life those two seminal categories of swing music- performed in our unique style. You’ll hear riffs made famous by some of the greats such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Erskine Hawkins, and Pittsburgh’s own Billy Ekstine. And love songs originally performed by vocal stars Helen Forrest, Billie Holiday and even Rudy Vallee. From the Swing Era to today, dancers- and listeners too- need to feel that great swing beat. It’s a must. Whether you intend to cut a rug, or just sit back and listen, we hope you enjoy our versions of these timeless tunes- and Love the Rhythm in a Riff as much as we do!
