Ilya Netkach

Ilya Netkach is a professional violinist from Ukraine. He graduated from Kharkov State College of Music (2006) with a formal classical education. However, Ilya was keen to acquire improvisation skills – jazz in particular – and soon started attending jazz jams and playing gigs, both solo and as a session musician. In 2009, inspired by an interview of Steve Vai in Guitar World, about his first solo release “Flex- Able”, as well as by the music of Stephane Grappelli, Regina Carter, Jean-Luc Ponty, Eric Truffaz and others, Ilya began working on his own original music. His debut single, “Lugsana”, was released in December 2012. Since 2013, Ilya has been working in the Middle East as a teacher of music. He continues to compose and release his own music, as well as play occasional gigs. In May 2016, Ilya Netkach, with his band, won first place in the Battle of the Bands at the Hard Rock Cafe Bahrain. His EP “I Am” (2017) received positive reviews from “All About Jazz” and “Smooth & Soul”. Ilya Netkach is an indie musician and composer who releases original violin music fully on his own, occasionally collaborating with his musician friends. Ilya handles all the production, bookings and promos by himself; he has no label, sponsors, etc. so it is an entirely DIY project. Currently, Ilya is based in Al Ain, UAE, where he works as Violin and Music Theory Teacher.

It would be rather difficult to define Ilya’s style of music in one word. Some experts would say that it is indie, some would argue that it is fusion or jazz-rock, but any attempt to classify the style would inevitably mislead those who have not heard the music. In his original music, Ilya Netkach combines different styles of music, creating an exclusive musical cocktail – it’s an original, unique style and sound. The music of Ilya Netkach has a great degree of imagery: in each solo, his improvisations strive to accurately express a nuance of a mood, a feeling, a fleeting impression – and to bring it to the listener. With his violin, Ilya expresses that which always remains beyond the spoken word or gesture and cannot be expressed in any other way.

Ilya Netkach: I Am

Read "I Am" reviewed by Geno Thackara

No stranger to traveling, Ilya Netkach has absorbed a range of ideas between growing up in the Ukraine and (at the time of this release) teaching violin in the United Arab Emirates. A statement of identity such as I Am can't help showing all such personal sides, at least to the extent a five-track EP allows. The original intent was for a full-length recording--and that may still be possible somewhere down the road--but for this release he's chosen to focus ...
