Album Description
The first recording in a three album series, Jazz Triptych, Volume I - The Sacred features fresh, creative takes on hymns and spirituals, all arranged by jazz pianist/composer/bandleader Russell Schmidt. The album is structured in three parts, with trio, sextet, and vocal tracks grouped together. On the opening piano trio selections, Schmidt is joined by Dwight Kilian (bass) and Rob Moore (drums). The middle portion of the album offers three sextet tracks, featuring Tito Carrillo (trumpet & flugelhorn), Brice Winston (tenor sax), and Paul Ferguson (trombone). The final three tracks are vocal selections, in which the leader's singing is once again supported by Kilian and Moore. Taken in total, the pieces performed span nearly 500 years across the history of sacred music. But in the hands of these soulful performers they sound more vital and resonant than ever.
