Jim Hobbs

"Jim Hobbs was born and raised in north-eastern Indiana at the convergence of three rivers. He is a recipient of the Doris Duke New Works Grant for composition from Chamber Music America. After a childhood of chewing hay and catching salamanders he began playing the saxophone. He received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music where he majored in composition. It was there that he met bassist Timo Shanko and started the Fully Celebrated Orchestra (FCO), which has released 10+ recordings on various labels including Silkheart, Skycap and Innova. FCO is also the subject of a children's book. He has performed and recorded with Joe Morris, Luther Gray, Taylor Ho Bynum, Bill Lowe, The Jazz Composers Alliance, Forbes Graham, The Prodigal Suns, Mackie Burnett, Fred Hopkins, Laurence Cook, Jon Voight, Junko Simons, Nightstick, The Death's Head Quartet, Josh Roseman, Curtis Hasselbring, The Lunch Factor, Laura Andel, Brother Blue and many others."

Taylor Ho Bynum 9-tette: The Ambiguity Manifesto

Read "The Ambiguity Manifesto" reviewed by Giuseppe Segala

Taylor Ho Bynum: The Ambiguity Manifesto

Read "The Ambiguity Manifesto" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Cornetist, composer, organizer and curator Taylor Ho Bynum marshals his recording The Ambiguity Manifesto into the categories of before and after, as in AM/PM, BC/AD, and maybe more appropriately before AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) and after AACM. With the entire breadth of recorded jazz history available, Bynum chose the concepts of the AACM as the tipping point(s) for this recording. This is a natural progression from his apprenticeship with Anthony Braxton and also his work with ...

Taylor Ho Bynum 9-tette: The Ambiguity Manifesto

Read "The Ambiguity Manifesto" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Taylor Ho Bynum's The Ambiguity Manifesto, with its oxymoronic title, is the third album in what the cornetist-composer calls an “accidental trilogy." Following his Firehouse 12 Records releases Navigation (Possible Abstracts XII & XIII) (2013) and Enter the Plus Tet (2016), Bynum recognized a form--however unconventional--both in the composition and performing of these large ensemble works. With a 9-tette made up of members of his sextet and Plus Tet, Bynum adds Stomu Takeishi on electric bass. Bynum cites ...

AYCH / Jim Hobbs / Mary Halvorson / Taylor Ho Bynum: As The Crow Flies

Read "As The Crow Flies" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Three prominent modern-era improvisers offer a lesson in stark contrasts on this session, containing semi-structured and composed works. The artists construct off-center balladry, angst, and playful, cartoon-like soundscapes, amid a few doomsday scenarios dispersed throughout the jaggedly moving parts. Alto saxophonist Jim Hobbs' “Over Yonder" stands out, because it would have seemed highly unlikely that the trio would flirt with traditional, New Orleans jazz frameworks within the set's largely freely organized and vastly expressive agenda. Sparking remembrances of ...

AYCH / Jim Hobbs / Mary Halvorson / Taylor Ho Bynum: As The Crow Flies

Read "As The Crow Flies" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Improvising confederates agree to collaborate to create music out of thin air, right? Well, yes. Except when they don't. AYCH features three of the finest improvisers working today: saxophonist Jim Hobbs; guitarist Mary Halvorson; and cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum. All three come with stellar pedigrees and experience in guitarist/bassist Joe Morris' ensembles, plus Halvorson and Bynum were schooled at the knee of Anthony Braxton. Their previous recording together was last year's Bynum Sextet session, Apparent Distance (Firehouse 12, ...

The Fully Celebrated: Drunk on the Blood of the Holy Ones

Read "Drunk on the Blood of the Holy Ones" reviewed by John Sharpe

For Drunk on the Blood of the Holy Ones, Boston's The Fully Celebrated have dropped the orchestral tag from their name, but retain their wide ranging eclecticism, all transmuted through a jazz prism. Though altoist Jim Hobbs composed all eight tracks, it is the tight syncopation of bassist Timo Shanko and drummer Django Carranza that breathes impudent life into them. A shared history in roots reggae bears fruit on the title track but Hobbs and Shanko have also plumbed the ...

Jim Hobbs Launches Aych on Relative Pitch Records

Jim Hobbs Launches Aych on Relative Pitch Records

Source: Chris Rich

Relative Pitch Records couldn't be a prouder papa at the birth of its brand new release, As the Crow Flies from Aych, a trio dedicated to the potential for 'porch music' and the role of the letter 'H' in a surname. Thus we have a subtle, wry and sly convergence of guitarist Mary Halvorson and cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum with the irrepressible alto saxophonist Jim Hobbs for deepest delvings into the potentials of porch music the world has yet seen. ...

Jim Hobbs joins Aych and the Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet at Outpost 186 on Friday Dec 23

Aych is a trio comprising Mary Halvorson guitaristry, Jim Hobbs saxophone honing and Taylor Ho Bynum cornettery in some serene survey of juxtapositions Mr. Hobbs variously describes as “porch music" This will be a Boston premiere as is a cd release show for the newly reshaped Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet brought to ears as Apparent Distance from the Firehouse 12 label. The sextet will entail the augmentation of Aych, above, with Bill Lowe in a bass trombone and tuba deployment, ...

Laurence Cook and Jim Hobbs Conjure "Tragedies of Love" on Blaq Lghtn Records

Source: Chris Rich

Blaq Lghtn recently released its third disc, Tragedies of Love, a duet involving the elder statesman of Boston drummers, Laurence Cook with the mayor of Boston music, Jim Hobbs and his beloved alto saxophone. It is a work laden with the reflections one might expect in the William Blake form of Experience. If anything, both epitomize Blake's notion of 'the prolific.' From Joslyn Layne at All Music, we have this succinct and useful summary for the drummer. “Drummer Laurence Cook ...

Jim Hobbs, Joe Morris, Luther Gray - The Story of Mankind (Not Two, 2008) ****

Source: All About Jazz

Saxophonist Jim Hobbs is probably best known as the leader of the insufficiently known Fully Celebrated Orchestra, his quartet with Taylor Ho Bynum, Timo Shanko and Django Corranza, a band that is funky, free and often hard-driving as a rock band.On “The Story Of Mankind", Hobbs joins forces with Joe Morris on bass and Luter Gray on drums, for a slightly but not entirely different approach. The music is still rhythmic and free, but a lot more expressive ...
