Joe Goehle

Joe comes to music from a place of curiosity. Throughout his earliest years, Joe has been interested in exploring how things work and how humans understand their world. His development in music was no different, as he began to explore a multitude of musical instruments in non-traditional ways. With encouragement from local Buffalo musicians, Joe was able to imagine and execute a range of music that spanned the entire gamut of musical genre. He picked up the double bass and began frequent work as a sideman and bandleader throughout upstate New York. While studying with Ottawa bassist John Geggie, Joe was exposed to even more musical styles, eventually settling him into a deep study of modern classical music and the use of improvisation in this setting. Joe was also able to continue his study of how people learn and understand their world through a continued examination of pedagogy and a steady teaching schedule. Both of these focuses help fuel the curiosity that drives his music. Joe received his B.M. in Music Education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and has recently earned his M.M. in Jazz Studies from New York University. Currently, Joe resides in Buffalo and maintains a busy schedule of performing as a leader and sideman. His new project, Cerebral People, is informed by his previous and current study of improvisation and its relation to the human condition. He continues to teach and study how musicians perceive music and their world. Together, performing and teaching ultimately lead Joe to a place of self-awareness in sound that continues to help him create passionate and deep music.
