Joey Pero

Joey is considered to be one of the pre-eminent trumpet talents of our time. His skill with classical playing is unprecedented as can be witnessed by hearing him play the Partita BMV 1006 by Bach (written for Violin). In addition to his classical prowess, Joey has a jazz sound like no other player in history. Combining his classical sensibility with his jazz playing has fostered a sound that will change the face of Jazz forever. Whether playing 16th notes at blinding speed or double Eb’s with ease and tonal perfection, Joey is at ease with his trumpet and embodies the definition of an “instrument acting as an extension of ones self.”

Joey began his career in 1993 when he began playing with Genesee Quest Drum and Bugle Corps at the age of 12. Almost immediately the entire DCA community recognized the rare and obvious gift Joey exhibited. Joey has played as a featured soloist with Mighty St. Joe's Alumni Corps, Ghost Riders Mini Corps, The Hitmen, and Empire Statesmen, and is very grateful for the support offered to him from this community.

Joey was honored as the DCA Soprano Individual Champion in 2000, 2001 & 2002. He received the prestigious DCA Award for Best Showmanship (Vince Bruni trophy) in 2001 and Best soloist (Meg Russo award) in 2002 and 2004.

Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Roberts Wesleyan College Wind Ensemble, Senior High All County Band, New York’s All-State Band, New York All-State Orchestra, and All State Symphonic Band, are among the groups that Joey played with before age eighteen.

In 1999, Joey began studying at The Juilliard School at Lincoln Center in New York City. He participated in such Juilliard organizations as: Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Dance Orchestra and (Juilliard) American Brass Quintet. While at Juilliard, Wynton Marsalis took an interest in Joey’s musical ability and began teaching him privately for the next several years. Often, Joey is seen playing the gold brush, Monette trumpet that was a gift from his mentor, Mr. Marsalis.

Simultaneously with his studies at Juilliard, Joey became a member of the DeCappo Opera House, the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Orchestra, and the Inter-School Orchestra (ISO).

Upon leaving Juilliard, Joey attended The New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Charles Schlueter (First Chair of Boston Symphony). During that time, he won several positions with highly noted groups in Boston such as: The Berklee School of Music Tower of Power Ensemble, freelance positions with the Boston Philharmonic and the Albany Symphony.

Joey Pero: Breaking Sound Barriers

Read "Joey Pero: Breaking Sound Barriers" reviewed by Nicholas F. Mondello

The great lead and jazz trumpeter Bobby Shew tells his students that “talent is a matter of breaking barriers." While trumpeter Joey Pero might have brilliantly selected and covered “Defying Gravity" from Broadway's Wicked on his breakthrough CD, Resonance (Resonance Music Group, 2009), Pero has been defying and utterly smashing performance barriers all his life. What would you expect from a man who, still in his mother's womb no less, was given the chance to “witness" and leap in response ...

Joey Pero: Resonance

Read "Resonance" reviewed by Nicholas F. Mondello

Citius, Altius, Fortius--faster, higher, stronger. That is the Olympic motto representing the philosophical and performance goals of its participating athletes. Incredible, fascinating, and tremendous are not the only the goals, but the results of phenom trumpeter Joey Pero's Resonance. This is a bravura musical performance of incredible musicianship, “virtu-artistry" and superior production values. Pero, still in his twenties, has meteorically established himself internationally as a trumpeting force. Forged in “Upstate Burn" (a hip accolade for jazzers emanating ...
