Jonathan Steele

Jon Steele is a bass player, educator, arranger, and composer in Washington DC. He's gigged with many of the best jazz musicians in town, recorded with all kinds of artists, and maintains a loyal roster of students.

His latest release as a leader features world class musicians- Kevin Hays, Vinnie Colaiuta, Tedd Baker, Tom Williams, and Mike Pavone.

Having studied both jazz and classical at the University of Tennessee, Jon graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Studio Music and Jazz and a Master's degree in Double Bass Performance. He has toured throughout the U.S., and worked with a diversity of artists such as Donald Brown, Louise Mandrell, and Sarah Lipstate, and also with symphonies in Tennessee and North Carolina.

He spent some time on the west coast recording and playing gigs all over the LA area. Upon his return to the east and arrival to DC, he quickly began working with some of the not-so-local greats including Benito Gonzales, Wade Beach, Bob Butta, Yvonne Johnson, Peter Edelman, Tony Martucci, Nathan and Noble Jolley, Quincy Phillips, Lyle Link, Tedd Baker, Tom Williams, Geoff Reecer, Steve Herberman, Michael Pavone, Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, the Butch Warren Legacy Quintet, the Low End String Quartet, Red Hot Rhythm Chiefs and many, many more. He currently holds the bass chair with DC's premier, modern chamber orchestra, the Great Noise Ensemble, is the bassist for Amaretto and 10/9 Central. He can be heard at various clubs around town.
