Julian Jimenez Ruiz

Born to a family of non-musicians in Cordoba, Spain, Julian’s introduction to music was quite unorthodox. He started taking Flamenco guitar lesson in high school. Whilst he learnt about styles like Fandango and Solea, he remained curious about many different genres and kept researching into other styles such as Funk, Rock and finally Jazz by the means of his mentor Fran Mazuelos.

In the pursuit of furthering his musical horizons, he completed his Bachelors in Berklee College of Music and later obtained his Masters degree in Jazz Performance from Queens College studying under musicians such as Mike Moreno, Antonio Hart, Alain Mallet, Michael Mossman and many more. Instigated by the stimulating environment of creative individuals he found himself surrounded by during those years, he discovered one of his biggest passions, composition, which he uses as a method to pursue meaning, and understand individuality in contrast to the deep influence our different cultures and traditions have on us as humans.

In May 2018, he recorded his first album comprised of his original compositions with Iñigo Ruiz de Gordejuela on Piano, Simon Willson on Bass and Samvel Sarkisyan on drums. The music in that album has a huge influence of pop and folkloric music in the way melodies are constructed, arranged and presented in a Modern Jazz aesthetic.

He has been fortunate to perform and share stage with many great artists such as Leo Brouwer, Sherman Robertson, and many more, and has performed all around the USA, Spain, Italy and Ecuador.
