Justin Salisbury

Justin Salisbury is a Brooklyn-based pianist, keyboardist, and electronic musician. He began his musical journey taking piano lessons at an early age, as well as studying with several of the Pacific Northwest’s finest musicians, such as Sharon Moe, Clay Giberson, Derek Sims, and Alan Jones. In 2013, Justin had the honor of playing piano at the Portland Jazz Festival, under the direction of NEA Jazz Master Gerald Wilson. Later that year, he received the Jimmy Lyons Scholarship- a full-tuition scholarship to attend the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Salisbury’s four years in Boston proved to be time of enriching experiences. Studying at Berklee College of Music gave him the opportunity to learn directly from teachers he had long admired, including Hal Crook, Ray Santisi, Joanne Brackeen, Bob Gullotti, Dave Liebman, George Garzone, Joe Lovano, and Alon Yavnai. After graduating in 2017, Salisbury moved to New York City, where he currently resides. Within mere weeks, he had quickly established himself as an in-demand sideman and bandleader, actively involving himself in numerous musical projects. Today, Salisbury has traveled and performed at many festivals and jazz clubs around North America, Asia, and Europe, such as the Monterey Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, European Jazz Competition, Nancy Jazz Pulsations, and Pop Montreal. Salisbury has also collaborated with many notable artists from diverse musical backgrounds, such as Mike Stern, Emel Mathlouthi, Jerry Barnes, Marko Djordjevic, Evan Marian, Daniele Germani, Miriam Elhajli, and SEACATS, among others. In 2022, Justin released his debut album entitled “Evergreen” featuring Max Ridley on bass and Dan Nadeau on drums.

Justin Salisbury: Evergreen

Read "Evergreen" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Where do you start if you want to play at Carnegie Hall? Growing up in the small town of Clatskanie, Oregon, is probably not the obvious choice. Pianist Justin Salisbury has certainly put in the miles, playing in France, Egypt, China, Cambodia, Italy and North America as well as Carnegie Hall. He was aided in that journey by a move to Boston to study at Berklee College and by learning from other pianists on the Boston scene, including Ray Santisi, ...

Daniele Germani: A Congregation of Folks

Read "A Congregation of Folks" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Ambition is not in short supply for up-and-coming alto saxophonist Daniele Germani. Back in 2019, the Berklee College of Music alumnus committed himself to writing a song a day, and ten are featured here on his debut disc, A Congregation of Folks. Nor are they easy-come, easy-go compositions; there is an innate restlessness in Germani's muse, leading to pieces which ebb and flow with a surging intensity. While Germani is no stranger to other musicians' projects, his own record is ...

This is the debut of a brilliant talent. This is the first album by Justin Salisbury, an up-and-coming pianist who has been working in New York since 2017 after graduating from Berklee College of Music after performing with local musicians in Oregon. His talents in both performance and composition include the album title song (9), which is a perfect blend of forky taste and romantic taste, the story-rich development (1), and the continuation of Bill Evan's lyricism (4). The play of Ridley and Nadeau, who are co-stars, is also resilient, and it is a trio that is expected to be active in the future.
