Karoly Binder

Károly Binder is a Hungarian jazz pianist, composer and university professor. He is the head of the jazz department at the Music Teachers Training Institute of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. A great musician who applied his talent for new trends, different cultures, different composing techniques and synthesis of improvising systems, without forgetting his own cultural roots.

He has composed 318 chamber and piano pieces, 43 pieces for films, plays and radio theatres.

He has released 67 LPs and CDs, most of them his own compositions.

Binder played among others with Jiri Stivin, Ramesh Shotham, Charlie Mariano, Theo Jorgensmann, Mihály Dresch, John Tchicai, Barre Phillips and Róbert Benkő, Harry Becket, Theo Jörgensmann, Eckhard Koltesmann, Berndt Köppen, Trilok Gurtu, Federico Sanesi, Charlie Mariano, Barre Phillips, ...

Awards

His artistic career has been rewarded several times. His rewards and prizes: 1981 - winner of Kalis international Jazz-pianist competition 1986 - Hungarian Radio Jazz Competition 1989 - eMeRTon Díj / best soloist 1991 - Jazz album of the Year: Binder-Shotham: Dance Music 2003 - Erkel Ferenc-Prize 2011 - Ludwig Maximillian University /rewarded/ 2013 - Gramofon – Hungarian Jazz Prize 2017 - Artisjus – Lifetime Achievement Award
