Lal: Warm Belly, High Power

Read "Warm Belly, High Power" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

This Canadian group's nondescript moniker might serve as the antithesis of what it really represents. Led by the angelic pop/rock vocals of Rosina Kazi, the band draws upon multicultural musical influences to fuse a pleasantly unique and melodically savvy blend of electro-pop, complete with dream-laden themes. In addition to ethnic percussion and thumping beats, the artists pursue EFX swashes and treatments, often resulting in a cavalcade of spacey contrasts. You'll hear subliminal bossa nova motifs, misty vocals, open-ended synth ornamentations, ...

Backgrounder: Sidney Bechet/Martial Solal

Backgrounder: Sidney Bechet/Martial Solal

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet was one of jazz's most complex giants. Born in New Orleans in 1897, four years earlier than Louis Armstrong, Bechet made his first recordings in early 1920, three years before the trumpeter. Unfortunately, these recordings were never issued. His first released recordings, for Okeh, came out the same year as Armstrong's earliest 78s, in 1923. The following year Bechet was with Duke Ellington, and his clarinet-like approach on the soprano sax influenced Ellington's vision for his ...

Martial Solal Trio Recordings, 1953-1962

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Martial Solal was born in Algiers in 1927, when the city was part of what was known then as French Algeria. At 6, he began taking piano lessons and for years played classical pieces. Then he discovered the extraordinary recordings of Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum, and turned to jazz. Solal moved to Paris in 1950 and played with a variety of bands and combos. In April 1953, he recorded with Django Reinhardt on what would be the guitarist's last ...

Interview: Lalo Schifrin

The Sunday before Hurricane Sandy veered inland and flooded Northeastern coastal areas, I caught the last flight out of JFK bound for Los Angeles. I was heading west to interview Lalo Schifrin for the Wall Street Journal (go here). As the jet taxied, it seemed only fitting that my conversation with music's master of suspense should start out with real-life nail-biting drama. Meeting Lalo was a thrill for me. One of my first exposures to jazz as a kid was ...

Lalo Schifrin

Lalo Schifrin

Source: Sound Insights by Doug Payne

A very happy 79th birthday to Lalo Schifrin, one of the greatest composers jazz and film has ever known, a damned fine pianist and truly one of the nicest people you could ever want to meet. Born June 21, 1932, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lalo Schifrin's resume would be impossible to list here (check out my discography for that). But there are so many high points, including Dizzy Gillespie's historic Gillespiana, Jimmy Smith's award-winning The Cat and Paul Horn's award-winning ...
