Larisa Migachyov

I was born in Russia (to poor but honest parents), and started piano lessons at the age of 5 (and started composing shortly afterwards). I attended a fairly serious Russian music school, learning piano, theory, composition, and a whole lot of other things, until my family immigrated to the US. After immigrating to Minnesota, I continued taking piano lessons at the local music school, playing exclusively classical music (mostly Chopin), but decided not to pursue music as a profession (I majored in engineering instead, with a minor in math).

I discovered ragtime only about 3 years ago, after seeing a San Antonio Ragtime Society flyer in a local health-food store (another testament to the importance of health food). Eventually, this led to my coming to the Scott Joplin Festival in 2006, which led to all sorts of other festivals and other wonderful performance opportunities. I premiered my first composition, "The Purple Chicken", at the 2006 Scott Joplin Festival, and kept writing new ones after that. Discovering ragtime, and returning to serious music-making, is the best thing that ever happened to me; I still can't believe my good fortune.

I currently attend law school at the University of Pennsylvania, after several years of working as an engineer in Silicon Valley. I also operate an online math tutoring site.
