Lester Ang

"As a kid I heard Sidney Bechet singing through his horn. I knew right away that I needed to tell my story that way too."

Saxophonist/Composer Lester Ang refined the rudiments of his instrument playing a hodgepodge of genres with concert bands in his native country of Singapore. In High school, he ultimately become the Music Director/Student conductor on top of holding the soloist chair for two consecutive years (for saxophone and flute) at the Combined Schools Wind Band Festival in Singapore.

A versatile musician, Lester was recruited by the Singapore Armed Forces Music & Drama Company during his National Service, joining an alumni of notable industry wind- instrumentalists and recording artistes such as Teo Boon Chye and Fabian Lim. Familiar with both jazz and pop idioms, he served as a touring musician on diplomatic ambassadorships to Australia and has collaborated on numerous occasions with a highly eclectic mix of artists, one of whom is Dharni Ng, who held the title as Asian's Top Vocal Percussionist. He was also a regular soloist with the St. James Powerstation Jazz Orchestra, Singapore's premier jazz ensemble.

Besides his work as a soloist, Lester is actively involved in musical theater. He was a pit-musician with touring musicals such as The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, in which he collaborated with an all-star cast from Manila.

Lester joined the Singapore Jazz Orchestra in 2007, under the direction of Derek Tan.

He currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts when he is an undergraduate majoring in Economics & International Relations. He is a member of the Boston University(BU) Big Band and also the President of Mensa, BU Chapter.

When he is not figuring out his instrument, Lester enjoys good food and intelligent conversations.
