Li Xiaochuan

Li Xiaochuan is a jazz trumpeter and composer, who has become one of China's premier jazz musicians since his emergence in 2001.He began his musical career when he was 11 years old. His father, who is a professional trumpeter, was an early influence on him and has given him the most musical influence to date, since he was born. He studied classical music and graduated from the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory in 2005 with a degree in classical trumpet performance. During this period, he was a member of the Shanghai Conservatory Youth Orchestra and played in Shanghai Spring Festivals. However, his talent in jazz and creative musical expression, soon made him one of the most sought-after jazz musicians in China. After playing his first jazz concert in 2004, he began to work with the Shanghai Jazz Orchestra and played at Shanghai Jazz Festival 2006 and 2007.Also during this time he lead the group "E-Groove", a Shanghai-based jazz band that performed original music, fusion, and jazz standards. For this project he collaborated with outstanding musicians and singers such as Coco Zhao, Nils Landgren, Wang Hao, Erica Lee, Jasmine Chen, Chih-Peng Chen, Tian Guoan Etc. He has been playing at different venues in Shanghai, such as Shanghai Concert Hall, Shanghai Grand Theatre, shanghai Oriental Art Center, Jin Mao Tower Concert Hall, Shanghai Art Theatre, Shanghai Centre Theatre and numerous jazz lives. In 2007, he left Shanghai and headed for Texas to pursue his Master degree in University of North Texas. There he received the Richard Dalrymple Memorial Jazz Trumpet Scholarship and was the first Asian musician receives this scholarship.He has studied with Mike Steinel,Ingird Jensen, Fred Hamilton,Rodney Booth,Jay Saunders,and Joe Magnarelli etc. As an active working jazz musician, he has played with a number of great musicians such as Stefan Karlsson,ED Soph,Bernard Wright, Cas Haley, Tito Puente JR,Dana Hawkins, Brad Leadi and Shelley Carroll Big Band,UNT 2 o'clock Lab Band,The Zebras,Bon Jovi (as opening band) and many more. He has also been fortunante enough to perform in such venues as Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center Dallas,Murchison Performing Center, Stan Kenton Hall, and Syndicate jazz lounge,Frisco Jazz Fest,Denton Art & Jazz Fest,Deep Ellum Jazz Fest, live show in Dallas radio station KNON 89.3, Puppets Jazz Bar New York City. In 2009 Li lead his own personal project the "Li Xiaochuan Quartet" Across a 5 city tour of China and Hong Kong. This tour was a great success and included a recording "A psalmody of Love" and performances at some of the most well-known venues through out China and Hong Kong.
