From Carnegie to discount " a backwards story of success

The jazz quintet Magnify release the cd/USB-card ”Sing” late summer 2010

Few groups are lucky enough to start their careers playing in New York City’s Carnegie Hall. But for Danish quintet Magnify, this was the starting point for their collaboration when

they (as the only band from outside USA) were invited to take part in a weeks workshop followed by a concert in the prestigious concert space. This gave the incentive to further develop the group, and the result was Magnify’s debut cd, released in 2007 on the discount-label TIGER. Poetically speaking the prince had turned into a frog, the sleeping beauty had gone back to sleep again, or cinderella had returned to her stepsisters’ house.

But all was not bad; the cd sold impressively " 6.000 copies and counting just in Denmark. Magnify spent the following years gigging, writing new material and developing their sound. In 2009 they travelled back to New York City to gig and record a new cd with the tenor saxophonist Marc Mommaas (NL/US). Magnify now releases this recording titled ”Sing” on Gateway Music in the late summer of 2010 both as a cd and a USB-card containing extensive bonus material as well as the music. With the release Magnify shakes the discount and the fairytale dust off their shoulders and present their challenging and listenable version of contemporary jazz.

”Sing” contains original and personal compositions. It is recorded in New York City, and the combination of the nordic tone and the un-tameable energy of the metropole is heard in beautiful, catchy melodies and solid grooves. Magnify moves effortlessly between up-tempo bebop, free improvisation, funk and indie- /post-rock; everything delivered with an in-your-face rock attitude that gives the band it’s own, unique sound.

Magnify consists of 5 talented jazzmusicians seen otherwise in as differing settings as Django Bates’ Stormchaser, Rasmus Ehlers Trio, Danish Radio Bigband and Nikolai Bentzon Quartet.
