Mark Tonelli

Mark Tonelli is a guitarist and composer. He is the leader of The Mark Tonelli Group, with whom he has recorded three CD’s, and guitarist for the West Point Band’s Jazz Knights. As a leader, sideman, and with the Jazz Knights, his performance credits include Benny Golson, Clay Aiken, Rita Moreno, Carol Channing, The New York Philharmonic Brass Quintet, The Platters, The Coasters, Jon Faddis, Rufus Reid, Billy Cobham, and Bobby Watson. He has performed at venues such as Cornelia St. Cafe, St. Peter's Church, Avery Fisher Hall, 55 Bar, The Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, The Jazz Showcase, and The Jazz Kitchen. He has been seen on Fox News and in the Emmy-nominated PBS musical program Marina at West Point.

Mark’s original music has been featured on National Public Radio’s (NPR) All Things Considered, and he has won composition awards from Billboard Magazine. His compositions and arrangements are frequently performed by the West Point Band and have been recorded on two Jazz Knights CD’s. They are published by UNC Jazz Press.

Mark is also a dedicated educator. He has given clinics and masterclasses at the National Jazz Workshop, The New York State Band Directors Association Conference, Rutgers University, The William Paterson University Summer Jazz Workshop, The Ft. Worth Jazz Festival, and many others. His articles have been published in Guitar Player, Downbeat, JazzEd, The Jazz Education Journal, Just Jazz Guitar, Jazz Improv, and The Instrumentalist. He currently teaches music at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, NY.

Mark holds a BM in jazz performance from William Paterson University and an MM in jazz studies from the University of North Texas where he was a teaching fellow in the jazz guitar department. He is completing his doctorate in education at Columbia University Teachers College.
