Marlouie Saique

Marlouie Saique came to Canada in 2009 from the Philippines. He went through the public-school music program at Harry Ainlay High School where he played in the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. Marlouie completed his Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz and Contemporary Popular Music from MacEwan University this past year. During his time at MacEwan, Marlouie studied under Edmonton trumpet virtuoso Joel Gray. He also held the lead trumpet chair in the MacEwan Big Band I for five seasons and was the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the MacEwan Trumpet Ensemble for three years.

Marlouie continues to grow his musical career in Edmonton as a musician and clinician. He was a regular member of the Edmonton Youth Orchestra for six seasons. Marching music has been an integral part of his musical journey and he has performed at the Drum Corps International World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana with the Blue Saints Drum Corps and the Oregon Crusaders Drum Corps. He taught the Edmonton Sabers Marching Band for three seasons and was an instructor and ensemble director with the Vernon Cadet Training Centre for three summers. He has appeared with the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra on numerous occasions as a section member as well as a regular pit musician of the MacEwan Theatre Department and other various musical productions. In Spring 2019, Marlouie was featured as a guest soloist with the Festival City Winds Music Society.

Currently, Marlouie is taking part in a conducting mentorship with Mr. Raymond Baril and the Edmonton Winds. He is also working with Mr. Joel Gray as a co-director of the Littlebirds Allstar Big Band and Combo on top of working as a freelance musician, adjudicator, and educator.

Awards

Marlouie has been the recipient of numerous awards including the John K. Nikel Scholarship presented by the Alberta International Band Festival, and the Diana Bacon Scholarship Award presented by Diana Bacon and the Edmonton Youth Orchestra. He has also received the Maestro Award from the Seattle WorldStrides Heritage Festival, Band Director’s Award from Harry Ainlay High School, Alexander Rutherford Scholarship, Armand and Lucie Baril Scholarship, Jazz Band Scholarship and Music Convocation Award presented by MacEwan University.
