Martin Lutz

Martin Lutz (b. 1974) is a versatile composer. So far his work has contained both classical and popular music. He has written works for numerous choirs in neoromantic style inspired by mostly nordic composers such as Niels La Cour, Bo Holten, Per Skriver and Javier Busto.

Furthermore he works as a jazzmusician, -composer and - arranger in a number of groups - for example in his own sixtet (Martin Lutz Group) or in duo/trio/quartet. All the mentioned ensembles play Lutz’ own compositions which show roots in american souljazz, african jazz (Martin Lutz has a close relationship to the african tone as a result of his childhood and youth in southern and eastern Africa) and the more lyrical nordic tone. During the last years he has released a number of albums as leader and sideman, besides a book for beginners and advanced students of rhythmic piano playing. His music has been played on local, national and international radio and television on numerous occasions and he has worked on several musical productions as composer and arranger.

Martin Lutz Group: LoLife/HiLife

Read "LoLife/HiLife" reviewed by Chris May

Danish pianist and composer Martin Lutz spent much of his childhood in Eastern and Southern Africa and elements of those regions' music are to the forefront of his writing, grafted on to a Northern European folk and neo-classical base. The result is a lyrical and redemptive sound which somehow, despite this being a purely instrumental ...

Martin Lutz: In Denmark I Was Born

Read "In Denmark I Was Born" reviewed by Gareth Thompson

Martin Lutz is an eclectic Danish composer with a global outlook and a compassionate ethic. He believes in love, empathy and the power of collective action. Try stating an argument against all that. For this group outing, Lutz the pianist takes something of a backseat. Instead his backing ...

Martin Lutz Group: Where Are the Trumpets?

Read "Where Are the Trumpets?" reviewed by John Barron

On Where Are the Trumpets?, Danish pianist/composer Martin Lutz leads his energetic sextet through an invigorating set of contemporary jazz laced with the sounds of Americana. Bassist Lars Johnsen, drummer Ricco Kjaer and special guest Paolo Russo on bandoneón add to the disc's rich textural blanket of sound. Although there is plenty of improvised blowing from each ...
