Mary Jenson

Winner of Indie Music Channel's 2012 "Best Female Jazz Artist", Mary Jenson is a vocalist from the Bay Area.

Dubbed "Golden Voice" and "West Coast Cool" Mary Jenson's soulful voice takes you on a journey through original music and masterfully reinvented jazz and contemporary covers with the group BEYOND STANDARD JAZZ www.BeyondStandardJazz.com

Mary Jenson released her second album in January 2011 at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland. BEYOND was inspired by the dream state, a human condition of vulnerability and wonder. This collection of originals, contemporary covers and beautiful Jazz standards is featured in Mary’s live performances.

Born on an Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi, Mary Jenson is the 6th of 8 children. Her childhood as a military brat was a nomadic one, moving from Mississippi to California, Germany, Georgia, and then back again to California by the time she was 9 years old.

Classically trained but with a great love of jazz and contemporary music, Mary spent time on the Left Coast of California as a small market radio disc jockey, developing a love of music crossing genres and perspectives.

Her 2009 debut CD Close Your Eyes was a reflection of that broad perspective and earned her reviews that acknowledged her wide range.

Mary’s current projects include BEYOND STANDARD JAZZ, which she describes as a portal for music that defies genre, and ARTsongs, a collection of exquisitely beautiful melodies.

Mary Jenson has a winner that's sure to please all vocal jazz lovers." —Wayne Wallace, Arranger, composer, musician “ Gorgeous and inspirational east-west jazz blend...pure enjoyment!!!" —Shambhu “I knew this was a serious jazz singer who had something to sing about." —L. Pierce Carson, Napa Valley Register Born on an Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi, Mary Jenson is the 6th of 8 children. Her childhood as a military brat was a nomadic ...

“And floating on top of or riding the crest of the music is Ms Jenson and her mellifluous voice. It really is a wonderful thing - light and floaty one moment and then bluesy the next.“ —The Borderland, March 2011

“She is accessible and yet mysterious, direct and yet elusive. Her website characterizes her sound as "jazz/world/fusion," and it's full of unexpected depths, whether she's singing originals or a standard or pop song… I find myself rather addicted to this album late nights and daytime.” —Talkin’ Broadway, March 2011

“Jenson has a true and pure instrument and she uses it to convey compelling lyrics and inflections to convince the listener of every note… …Beyond is an album filled with artistry and strong performances. An inspiring offering by a talented and limitless vocalist, Jenson has put together not only a journey beyond the ordinary, but a measure of what all vocalists should aspire to, worth the listen, and certainly worth the buy.” —ALL About Vocals Review, November, 2011
