Mathieu Soucy

UNSTABLUES GROUNDS and TRINKLE TINKLE, Mathieu’s debut singles as a leader of his jazz trio, are hitting la Toile on September 1st 6 PM ET (Youtube, Spotify, Apple music, etc.).

Jeu d’ombres, Mathieu Soucy’s first incursion into the magical space out of which half- improvised music and poetry emerge and to which they both return, will be launched on September 24th under FLORAFONE RECORDS. The short suite features Montreal-based mythic vocal storyteller Sarah Rossy and bears the poetical imprint of Paul Éluard and Charles Baudelaire to whom Mathieu lends his soundboard, so as to let their conjoined light shine forth in an undistorted yet very personal manner.

French surrealist poetry is a constant source of inspiration for the young composer and, as a result of ongoing self-studies, he will be presenting a piece for the 2021 edition of the Montreal Contemporary Music Lab (LMCML).

Mathieu graduated with a degree in jazz performance (minor in philosophy) from McGill University in 2019, where he received the David Moyse Guitar Scholarship (2017-2018) and the Calder Spanier Memorial Prize (2018-2019) for the quality of his compositions, among other academic distinctions. Since 2016, he has had the opportunity of studying composition with John Hollenbeck, and to study privately with some of his favourite modern guitarists: Alex Goodman and Peter Bernstein.

Mathieu was hired in the fall of 2019 by Lower Canada College (LCC) and Jeunes musiciens du monde (JMM) respectively as a private and small-group instructor.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
