Album Description

Michigan based jazz singer and clarinetist Sarah D’Angelo embarks on her first solo album, joined by a bevy of incredible local jazz artists to create the spiritual journey of Medicine Man. Weaving together multiple genres with a common thread of jazz, D’Angelo attempts to bring a sense of childlike wonder back to the listener. Her covers of songs like Abbey Lincoln’s “Throw It Away”, Dizzy Gillespie’s “Con Alma” and original “Roots” are responses to the frustrations of cultural failings and a yearning for brotherhood of humanity, while her lyrics to Esperanza Spalding’s “What a Friend”, her own “Medicine Man” and jazz standard “Wild Is The Wind” refer to the bewildering connection to the mystery of a greater and loving power sensed in the world around us. The album’s swinging, soulful, contemplative and bluesy range has everything to do with the killer line up of musicians on the tracks. The core quartet is made up of Canadian-based musicians Michael Palazzolo on bass, pianist Kevin Grenier and Ann Arbor’s own Jesse Kramer playing the drums. D’Angelo asked her long-time collaborator, friend and local jazz hero, Paul Keller to join with now New York based drummer Stephen Beogelhold, pianist Corey Kendrick and guitarist Sasha Kesperko for additional tracks. With husband, Mark D’Angelo playing percussion and soulful tenor saxophonist Bobby Streng rounding out the list of players, the album brings a bit of something for everyone’s unique listening pallet. Moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan to pursue her post graduate classical studies, D’Angelo was lit on fire by the Detroit jazz, funk and gospel she was experiencing. Continuing her studies, she experimented with singing and found an exhilarating freedom of musical expression in jazz, blues, gospel and pop. She has since been singing, playing, recording, writing, trail running and rescuing strays in and around Detroit and around the US. “Sarah D’Angelo does it with verve, class, confidence, poise, perfect intonation, spot-on phrasing, terrific dynamic, personal expression and loads of love. She’s an incredible team player with her own exquisite persona.” -Linda Yohn
