Meretrio

The Meretrio was brought together in São Paulo – Brasil, in 2004, as an initiative of Emiliano Sampaio (guitar and trombone), Gustavo Boni (acoustic and electric bass), and Luis André (drums and percussion), with the purpose of researching the diversity of popular music. In 2021, Meretrio releases its 7. album "Choros" playing only Brazilian music!

Meretrio played in important Festivals in Europe, Australia and Brazil such as Bayerisches Jazz Weekend, Perth Jazz Fest, Fête de la Musique, Jazz´n More, Mikulassky Jazz Festival, SESC Sao Paulo, Jazz Na Fábrica, and in the famous concert halls Porgy & Bess in Vienna and Sendesaal in Bremen. In 2017 Meretrio released the album Óbvio featuring the saxophonist Heinrich Von Kalnein (Jazz Big Band Graz) in two tracks, which got four stars from the Downbeat Magazine and entered in the list “Best Albums of the Year”. In 2019, Meretrio recorded a new project asking the question: would it be possible to mix trombone, guitar and electronics in a way that the music is also playable in live situations? This was Meretrio´s main motivation to compose several compositions exploring different colors than the traditional jazz trio Guitar, Bass and Drums. With the help of digital effects and loop machine, we can combine lines and harmonies from all instruments in real time, creating new textures and musical possibilities. Still in 2019, Meretrio released the album “Passagem” as a quartet with Heinrich von Kalnein (Tenor Sax and Flute), recorded at Bauer Studios and released by Natango Music. In the dialogue between the trios of the past and present, it is evident that the Meretrio keeps always developing their music, never leaving behind a sense of humour, creativity and the joy of making music.

"Emiliano sampaio is simply a wonderfully gifted musician! His talent is clearly represented on these new recordings, going back to his Brazilian roots. This is certainly a recording to add to your library!"
 Jiggs Whigham (2020)

„Irgendwie wird man den Eindruck nicht los, hier bewerbe sich wer für die Erste Liga der Top- Arrangeure.“ Fono Forum (Germany, 2019)

"Emiliano has created an exceptional collection of original compositions. Beautifully performed and produced, both ensembles bring to life the work of a passionate young composer who is developing a unique and expressive voice. His influences come from many sources within the jazz tradition as well as a wider sphere of contemporary music; Emiliano clearly has the mastery of craft and respect for these traditions to be able to absorb these elements to create something that is his own" Dr. David Lisik (Professor at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand) 2018
