Mika Yoshida

Mika Yoshida hails from Amakusa Island, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, and lives in New York City. She studied at the University of Toronto and since graduation has devoted herself to marimba performance and musical studies under the strong influence of the NEXUS. She is also studying jazz privately with jazz vibe master, Mike Mainieri, in New York .

She has released two Solo CDs: Mitsue (1998) and Marimba Phase (2003). Her newly released album, Mikarimba (VideoArt Music Japan 2010) and DVD Mika Marimba Madness (Big Round Music) were both produced by Steve Gadd.

Steve Reichs CD Triple Quartet includes Mikas arrangement and performance of Tokyo/Vermont Counterpoint (Nonesuch), Richard Stoltzmans CD Goldberg Variation (BMG Japan) and Jo Hisaishis CD (Universal Japan).

She has performed solo recitals in New York (Carnegie ZANKEL Hall 2007 and Carnegie Weill Recital Hall 2001, 2004), Tokyo (2001, 2003, 2006) etc. as well as several cities around the world. Also,She performed at PASIC (2005, 2007).

She has collaborated with Steve Gadd (Drums), Richard Stoltzman (Clarinet), Eddie Gomez (Bass), NEXUS (Percussion), Bill Douglas (pianist, composer), Thomas Stacy (English Horn, New York Philharmonic Symphony), KakrabaLobi (African GIRI master), Stomu Yamashita (Per) Chikuzan Takahashi (Tsugaru Shamisen) and several other talented musicians.

She had MarimbaConcerto with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Krakow, Szonbathely Symphony Orchestra, the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, and the Kumamoto Symphony Orchestra.

Mika was featured in a special performance at Zankel Hall (at Carnegie Hall) on January 7, 2011. There were several press reviews describing the wonderful concert with Steve Gadd, Eddie Gomez with special guests Peter John Stoltzman and Richard Stoltzman. She also recently played at Le Poisson Rouge on Fev.10,2011 in NYC with Richard Stoltzman.

Mika Yoshida was born in Kumamoto in 1964. She began to study the piano at the age of three and drums at the age of ten and marimba at the age of eighteen.

She is a graduate of Kumamoto Music College and was also instructor at this college.

Mika studied marimba in the United States with a subsidy from 'Kumamoto Culture and Art Promotion Association' in 1994.She also studied to perform marimba at Toronto University (Advanced Certificate in Performance) under Russell Hertenberger (NEXUS) i 1999 and 2000.

*Mika plays a marimba made by Douglas DeMorrow and uses her own signature mallets by Pro-Mark.
