Album Description

The Monash Sessions is an ongoing series of albums curated by jazz staff at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University, featuring acclaimed artists alongside Monash School of Music staff and students. Artists in this series of releases include Hermeto Pascoal, Linda May Han Oh, Kenny Werner, Sandy Evans, Ralph Alessi, Andrea Keller, Kate Ceberano, Mike Nock, Judy Bailey, Vince Jones, and Tony Gould. Recorded in 2016, this project features Ben Monder - a highly celebrated American guitarist and composer who has developed a distinctive ‘voice’ in improvised music both locally in the New York experimental scene and Internationally. He has collaborated with the leading figures in a broad range of music styles including David Bowie, Tony Malaby, Lee Konitz and Paul Motion. This recording is a collaboration between Monash University jazz students who had the opportunity to rehearse, perform and record Monders’ both visceral and considered compositions. This unique student experience is pivotal in the pedagogical approach for students at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, with national and international creative artists mentoring the next generation of jazz musicians. Produced by Robert Burke and Paul Williamson Recorded, mixed and mastered by Daniel Tan at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music Auditorium. Monash University technical assistance by Karl Willebrant. Artwork by Susy Cirina
