Monzell Dunlap

"The medium of music offers a beautiful range of storytelling to both the artist and listener through a collaborative spirit. The idea of creating sounds that move minds to travel; to remember; to appreciate and to aspire is what I love the most about what I do. Music is simply the medium… the art belongs to us all as we share our energies and explore our individual gifts to bring music to life."

Born in Wadesboro, North Carolina on May 26, 1969 to Alonzo W. Dunlap, Jr. (Gospel recording artist) and Milveta Dunlap (visual artist and educator), Monzell first started playing saxophone at age 11 and from there developed his skills on the drums. Although musically inclined at an early age, Monzell explored visual art, creative writing and mass technology at Appalachian State University earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology.

After fifteen years as a professional Graphic Designer, Monzell completed three independent jazz fusion projects and numerous creative writing ventures including 2bfilms screenplay projects (www.2bfilms.com). Monzell is now a published author, "Poetessential: Thoughts of a Man" and is involved in community and youth advancement projects across the Southeastern United States through Direct Action Media Academy, Inc., a grassroots non-profit organization formed in 2008 for the education and development of individuals, businesses and communities.
