Dave Thompson

Dave Thompson has made a career of being a guitarist-for- hire. Dave plays in the band of Juno winner Susan Aglukark, as well as with urban jazz soul singer Kellylee Evans. Dave studied jazz guitar and composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and has played thousands of gigs in concert halls, festivals, summer resorts, clubs, musical theatre, radio and TV, as well as on many CDs as a sideman. He released his latest CD “found. Wanting.” in 2007. In it there are echoes of Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, Sting, George Benson, and  Lyle Lovett. Some descriptions by others: “a smooth and sublime fusion” “so transparent and natural, it is like it was never recorded at all” with “brilliant lyrics, clean recording, warm voice and melodic guitar playing”, “delicate jazz guitar that dances at the right moments”, and “Found. Wanting is a terrific example of a Canadian artist making music for the love of the music.” Produced, written, arranged, recorded and edited by Dave, and mixed with Ron Chilton, this album’s foundation is the archetypal jazz guitar trio. Yet the music moves and grooves through stylistic worlds that are informed by a confessional songwriting tradition, pop and standard songs, and jazz improvisation and arranging. This is an accessible, yet eclectic performing and writing style: Intelligent, well-crafted music and lyrics, detailed arrangements and record production, and an intimate guitar and vocal style.
