Barbara Januszkiewicz

Mankind’s ultimate capital asset is creative vision.- Barbara Januszkiewicz "Creativity is not being afraid to be different. It takes madness to jump at an idea that no one else believes in. So let's be mad.”- Barbara Januszkiewicz Jazz visual artist. Her art has consistently advocated spreading art outside of preconceived boundaries, to inspire creativity in all areas of life, similarly to the style of Joseph Beuys. She is driven to take risks and see opportunities in alternative approaches and expressions in both her visual and musical aesthetics. "The excitement and the unexpected risks are what attract me to avant-garde, free jazz and fusion jazz. I approaches seeing music with using art, even with traditional media. As an artist I place emphasis on vision, so naturally my jazz projects/films focus primarily on visual perception. However, what if I could fuse cinematic projects with the perceptual vision of music? My philosophy is not just employing experimental techniques, but also being able to interpret material in various ways, such as gestures or methods of defamiliarization, as new visual sight, all interpretation of sound/music." In reconnecting with her passion for jazz she started to see art in musical terms, a fusion of jazz and painting. From her project Jazz Vision evolved from a real thirst for merging visual arts with new technology. It opens a new way of seeing music, its colors and textures, and breaks down barriers to experiencing art and to keeping art relevant. This new dialogue is at the heart of her creative vision with Jazz Vision. This multimedia visual artist teamed up with some top jazz players. In a wordless conversation, each in their own language responding to the other in a dialogue of musical notes and paint. As they play off each other’s voice or visual expression in an ever-changing musical palette, the music takes on a visual rhythm and colorful beat and transforms the way you look at a painting or listen to jazz music.

I met Dave Liebman, and that everything changed for me because he showed me how we could mix jazz and art together—real fusion. He helped me look outside my art studio and to see jazz as part of my art. Jazz can be a blank canvas full of ...

Jazzclub Singen (Hohentwiel, Germany) 15th Anniversary

Read "Jazzclub Singen (Hohentwiel, Germany) 15th Anniversary" reviewed by Robert R. Calder

Fifteen years ago Jazz-Club Singen was established in relation to the modest little theatre cum cinema (called GEMS) at the edge of the little industrial town of Singen-am-Hohentwiel, in the handsome German hinterland of Lake Constance (the Bodensee). About halfway through this period I became a part-time resident of the region. I hopped on a train one night in February 1998 and there was one of the concerts of my life: Paul Motian, Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell celebrating Friday ...
