Emanuele Maniscalco

Born in Brescia (Italy) in 1983, he started playing piano at the age of eight and drums at twelve. He studied drums on his own, and took piano lessons with Roberto Soggetti and Corrado Guarino. In 2005 he began studying classical piano with Massimiliano Motterle.

He started playing jazz seriously in 2000, after meeting Corrado Guarino and William Tononi, then attending Berklee Summer Masterclasses at Umbria Jazz '01, where he was recognized for Outstanding Musicianship. He studied Trio Performance at Fondazione Siena Jazz from 2001 until 2003 with pianist Stefano Battaglia, bassist Paolino Dalla Porta and drummer Fabrizio Sferra. He attended Siena Jazz Summer Masterclasses twice (2003 and 2004), receiving a scolarship to join the 14th IASJ Meeting in Freiburg, Germany. During this experience he met the American tenor saxophonist Daniel Kinzelman, with whom he began to work regularly.

He joined Theatrum (Permanent Musical Research Laboratories led by Stefano Battaglia) in 2003 (also started playing in Battaglia's quartet with Francesco Bearzatti on tenor sax and Giovanni Maier on bass). He met Enrico Rava in 2004 and started playing in his groups (Rava Under 21, Enrico Rava New Generation and Enrico Rava Quintet).
Emanuele plays with a number of well-known Italian musicians, including Rava, Battaglia, Walter Beltrami, Giovanni Guidi, Fulvio Sigurtà, Claudio Filippini and many others.

Both as a drummer and as a pianist, he's now working on his own music with different musicians. He also plays piano in a group called Three Magic Beans with drummer Nelide Bandello and Enrico Tarragnoli on acoustic bass.

He teaches drums in his area.

Ruth Goller: Skyllumina

Read "Skyllumina" reviewed by Chris May

The Italian-born, British-based bassist and composer Ruth Goller has been rattling jazz's cage since 2007, the year she joined Acoustic Ladyland. The band was in the vanguard of what became known as “jazz punk," although its sound was closer to metal than classic punk, and the lineup included tenor saxophonist Pete Wareham and drummer Sebastian Rochford. Four years later, Acoustic Ladyland disbanded and Goller and Wareham morphed into Melt Yourself Down, where they were joined by tenor saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings ...

Francesco Baiguera, Giacomo Papetti, Emanuele Maniscalco: Prèludes

Read "Prèludes" reviewed by Neri Pollastri

Read "Graduation" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

The group Il Sogno, a piano trio that employs a Wurlitzer piano along with an OB-6 synthesizer, steps back and forth over the line of melodic pop sensibilities into accessible jazz and soundtrack atmospherics to orchestral and sweeping soundscaping, presenting long and winding accompaniments to a surreal dreams—pretty in one tune, challenging and out there on the next. Birthday (Gotta Let It Out, 2017) is the band's first album. The follow-up—the disc in hand—is Graduation. The Polish-Danish-Italian trio—that ...

Maniscalco, Bigoni, Solborg: Foil

Read "Foil" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Emanuele Maniscalco Meets Sandro Gibellini: E/S

Read "E/S" reviewed by Neri Pollastri

Emanuele Maniscalco

Read "I 10 Cd nel CD-Player di... Emanuele Maniscalco" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

01. Massimiliano Milesi, Giacomo Papetti -Dimidiam (UR Rrecords -2015). Basso e sax tenore.
