Saul Rubin

“Saul is a consummate musician, a person who is aware of the feelings of others and a person who is gentle in that sense. He is everything I could ask for in a bandmate.”– SONNY ROLLINS

“Saul has it all together and is a positive force in the world of the guitar. He plays hip melodies, which he’s totally in touch with when improvising. His harmonies, both with his impeccable comping and chord soloing, employ refreshing voicings, and certainly keep the listener involved. – GENE BERTONCINI

“An accomplished guitarist” – THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

“The great unsung hero of jazz guitar in New York City…an economy of notes and laser-like purpose define Saul ‘Zeb’ Rubin” – LUCID CULTURE

Although his career has taken him around the world, guitarist Saul Rubin occupies a unique place in New York jazz as a musician, producer, impresario and personality. A regular member of Roy Hargrove’s Big Band and for decades, a beloved member of the NYC Jazz scene, Rubin has shared the stage and studio with artists as diverse as Sonny Rollins, Kirk Lightsey, Victor Lewis, Jonathan Batiste, Bob Cranshaw, Gregory Porter, Renee Fleming, John Hicks, Johnny O’Neal, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Candido, Winard Harper, Larry Willis, Eric Revis, Sherman Irby, Thomas Chapin, Lew Soloff, and countless others.

Whether writing the charts Roy Hargrove’s Big Band, producing countless recordings or live shows, or running his infamous long- running weekly Jazz Vocalist Series at ZEB’S performance space, the guitarist has single-handedly played host to many of the world’s greatest jazz artists. Featured on Sonny Rollins’ Road Shows Vol. 4: Holding The Stage (where Rubin plays in duo with Sonny) plus his own The Saul Rubin Quartet (2004) featuring John Hicks, Gerald Cannon and Montez Coleman & and Saul Rubin: The Zebtet (Red Records, 2015), featuring Stacy Dillard, Johnny O’Neal , Fabio Morgera, Ben Meigners and Brandon Lewis.

His last album as a bandleader aptly entitled, Zeb’s House, is a tribute to the community of great artists, showcasing both his irrepressible sense of humor as well as his signature gritty, purposeful, urbane sensibility, throughout a mix of both originals and standards.
