Zevious

Johnny and Mike met each other while attending college together in 1999 and instantly hit it off musically. They played together in several rock, funk, and jazz projects while living in Allentown, PA over the next few years, and gigged extensively in the Lehigh Valley Area both in groups and as freelance jazz musicians. Mike eventually made his way to New York in 2004, and Johnny moved to Philadelphia in 2005.

Meanwhile, Jeff had been touring the US extensively with his instrumental prog-metal group Dysrhythmia. Coming off the road in 2005 after extensive touring, Jeff settled in the New York area. With all three parties interested in starting a straight-ahead jazz project, Zevious was born. The group's first gig was at Lounge Zen in Teaneck, NJ during the summer of 2006.

After a few months of gigging in New York and Philly, the group quickly moved away from straight-ahead jazz covers and jumped right into writing original music, combining their unique jazz sound with progressive rock grooves, tech metal, afrobeat style vamps, free improv, and complex song forms. Zevious' first album showcases the evolution of their style, and the group has plans to tour and begin work on another album in 2008.

Zevious: Passing Through The Wall

Read "Passing Through The Wall" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Here's a group that started out as a no-frills jazz guitar trio. They've become louder and more aggressive, incorporating Machiavellian- like chutzpah, tinted with a punkish 'tude, spanning hardcore jazz- fusion and vintage progressive rock mechanisms. With an in-your-face modus operandi, the band intimates a high metabolism rate through a punishing impetus. The musicians' literally bust out of the seams during these blitzing compositions, where stinging ostinato grooves with a few discreet inferences to vintage King Crimson and high-volume jazz ...

Zevious: After the Air Raid

Read "After the Air Raid" reviewed by John Kelman

Amidst a legion of guitarists for whom chops is the end not the means, there's an alternate group of players with unrelenting skill and an avoidance of the “look at me" posing that seems endemic to the instrument, especially when it comes to more aggressive, rock-centric playing. Ben Monder's remarkable Oceana (Sunnyside), one of 2005's best albums, couldn't have been performed by a guitarist with anything less than complete mastery of his instrument, yet avoided any posturing front man mannerisms. ...

Here is the updated and final info for the New York trio ZEVIOUS as they begin their huge tour. Well, as final as anything can be when you get into the van with a bunch of gear and travel 12,000 miles across the USA and back over a month and hope that the venues will actually be there when you arrive (not to mention an audience).

This is your chance to see a great, truly hot NYC harmolodic/punk-jazz group in ...

"The music of Zevious shrewdly juxtaposes order and its opposite: structural intensity pushed to its breaking point in the most appealing way. These boys are brilliant and fearless." --Vijay Iyer
