Kerry Hodgkin

The Kerry Hodgkin Jazz Band is on tour in 2011. The band features some of the most exceptional players on the UK jazz scene today. The core band is a quintet including: Kerry Hodgkin (vocals), Janette Mason (piano), Andy Davies (trumpet/flugel), Nick Pugh (bass) and Mark Fletcher (drums)

The band is also available with special guest artiste, the multi-award winning Alan Barnes on saxophone/clarinet.

Kerry Hodgkin makes a welcome return to the forefront of the UK jazz scene in 2009/10 with a fantastic new album Table in the Corner. The album is produced by award winning vocalist Ian Shaw and features some of the cream of UK jazz, including Alan Barnes (sax/clarinet) and Janette Mason (piano). The album is released on 33 Records.

Kerry’s silk-and-steel vocals have been likened to jazz legend Sheila Jordan and diva Eva Cassidy! With a blend of contemporary jazz/soul/latin/blues originals and covers, expect a varied programme. This will include some of Kerry’s own compositions, along with original takes on material as diverse as Randy Newman, Rodgers & Hart, Billy Bragg, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Arlen & Mercer, Sondheim & Bernstein and talented folk/blues duo Hensley & Wright. Interpretations include arrangements by Ian Shaw, celebrated jazz drummer Clark Tracey, rising star pianist/composer Janette Mason and Hodgkin herself.

Kerry has been a professional jazz, blues and soul singer for well over a decade. Her training as an actress brings with it an extraordinary ability to interpret lyrics, which, added to Kerry’s innate musicality and exceptional vocal range, makes her an outstanding vocalist and performer!

“Hodgkin displays an ample stylistic range, and a not-unimpressive vocal range too. What really impresses though, is the controlled, accomplished demeanour… she sings with what sounds like real conviction, a refreshing change from the mannered, contrived histrionics that currently dominate the popular music scene and sometimes infect jazz and blues too. There are times when she recalls Eva Cassidy and even - incontinent praise indeed - Sheila Jordan.”

“If this was food, it would be freshly picked, still smelling of the earth, it would be bright in colour, and would, once you'd lavished care and attention in preparing it, simply melt in the mouth… Gorgeously supple vocals.”
Mac MacLaren, Lemonrock
