Michael Dalgas Trio: Death of a Tree

Read "Death of a Tree" reviewed by Phillip Woolever

Danish drummer Michael Dalgas' second release was composed while he overcame some considerable challenges, including a bout of depression and an extensive physical rehabilitation process which lasted over ten years. The result is a very good album, with a discernably powerful emotional foundation and varying selection of solid songs. “In 2010 I fell while having a friendly fight with a friend and broke both bones in the left forearm," Delgas told All About Jazz. “I had to go ...

Lars Fiil: Frit Fald (Free Fall)

Lars Fiil: Frit Fald

Read "Frit Fald" reviewed by Jakob Baekgaard

All musicians work with sound, but their approaches are different. To some, it starts with a melody, to others it begins with a groove and then there are those who are simply interested in sound. Fortunately, he has not shunned the idea of rhythm and melody completely. ...

Hailing from Aarhus, Lars Fiil is one of the latest discoveries on the Danish jazz scene. The young Danish pianist's quartet won the prestigious Young Jazz Comets Denmark in 2010, and is now ready to launch its debut, Reconsideration. The album, consisting entirely of compositions penned by the leader, shows a band whose understanding of the complexities of musical form belies its young age. While each of the members is certainly a highly skilled musician, instrumental prowess ...

Danish Jazz Comets Release Debut Album

Source: Michael Ricci

“Lars Fiil Quartet plays modern and competent jazz featuring amazing solo performances, great unity of execution and solid compositions. They just touched us, and we were captivated by their sound and their intensity." These words marked the announcement of the Danish-based Lars Fiil Quartet as winners of the prestigious competition Young Jazz in April 2010. This triumph led to long domestic as well as foreign tours, and the quartet's success continued when they participated in the pan-Scandinavian competition “Young Nordic ...

Lars Fiil - Frit Fald II (2018) "Lars Fiil's Free Fall was quite enigmatic due to the unpredictable, odd and mysterious way they gave shape to playful particles. They did it in a slowed down tempo with irregular steps and accents in wide spaces alternating elusive and deep sonorities. A specialty was the unorthodox use of the nay by Lis Raabjerg Kruse creating fascinating rich sounds. The overall effect was enchanting.” - Henning Bolte (NL) - Allaboutjazz "The gorgeousness of this CD is second to none I have heard in the past few months ... Improvisation never had it so good...” - Sammy Stein (UK) , freejazzblog "This is powerful and exciting music” - Wulf Muller (DE)
