Gordon was born in Guyana, where the culture and influences were more Caribbean than South American despite its geographical location. This explains the proliferation in Guyana of the Trinidadian invented and styled steel band or steel drum orchestra. As a young boy he saw the way the steel band was made and borrowed from the tuning process of the large oil drums. He was able to create his first instrument at the age of seven. Through the years he has continued to refine his approach to tuning and mounting the cans to improve tonality and create instruments of differing ranges. These exercises were, until recently, mainly for his own personal entertainment. He has thrilled audiences internationally with the simplicity and versatility of the instrument. Gordon plays in night clubs, private social gatherings, churches and more. Recently, has made several impromptu appearances at jazz jam sessions in Atlanta area. He has provided accompaniment on ‘A Gift to You’ CD recently released by Jae Duncan and is working with other up and coming artists of all genres who are looking for a ‘new’ sound to embellish their music. In addition, he is collaborating with fellow band member and award winning composer and arranger, Walter Bland to produce his first CD of original compositions for, and featuring the his instrument. His band CanVolution and its novelty, is becoming a popular attraction in the Atlanta area where he is currently based. His ambition is to popularize this virtually unknown instrument and introduce it as a new timbre to the music world. His passion is training youths make and inspiring them to create their own ‘green’ musical instruments.
