Irreversible Entanglements: Protect Your Light

Read "Protect Your Light" reviewed by Chris May

If ever there was a band which screamed to be taken up by Impulse! (or Strata-East back in the day), it is the semi-free agit-jazz quintet Irreversible Entanglements. Now, after three albums with the on-song but tiny International Anthem label, it has happened and, hopefully, greater exposure and recognition will follow. IE came together in 2015 when poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother), saxophonist Keir Neuringer and bassist Luke Stewart took part in a Musicians Against Police ...

Luis Vicente 4tet: House In The Valley

Read "House In The Valley" reviewed by John Sharpe

Portuguese trumpeter Luis Vicente wrote the four compositions which make up House In The Valley during lockdown. His intention was to evoke childhood memories of times at his grandparents' rural house. Judging from the outcomes there must have been a lot of '60s American New Thing on the turntable at the time. In particular the way the group realizes Vicente's melodies recalls Don Cherry's outings from that period such as Complete Communion (Blue Note, 1966) and Symphony For Improvisers (Blue ...

Luís Vicente 4tet: House In The Valley

Read "House In The Valley" reviewed by Mark Corroto

There is a synergy in simplicity and, with the Luís Vicente 4tet, a simplicity which comes from the synergistic effects of this unpretentious quartet. The four musicians--Portuguese composer, leader & trumpeter Luís Vicente, Dutch drummer Onno Govaert, and the Americans, tenor saxophonist John Dikeman and bassist Luke Stewart--assembled for a series of concerts in Portugal in 2021. This recording was captured in Caldas da Rainha on July 19th. The simplicity here is the same honesty we hear in the early ...

Luke Stewart Silt Trio, Nublu Orchestra & Brodie West Quintet

Read "Luke Stewart Silt Trio, Nublu Orchestra & Brodie West Quintet" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

Bassist Luke Stewart is a prominent name in improvised sessions these days. His own Silt Trio has a very interesting new release, The Bottom, and it's the highlight album on this edition of One Man's Jazz. Also very interesting is Toronto alto player Brodie West's new Meadow Of Dreams; it's coming out the new Toronto label, Ansible Editions and Astral Spirits. Butch Morris is at the controls on a new release by the Nublu Orchestra live from the Pomigliano Italy ...

From the irresistible Afro dancefloor life-affirming music of Nubyian Twist to two tributes to Wayne Shorter's contribution to the Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet, and a whole lot of other jazz declinations in this set. Irreversible Entanglements: Open The Gates

Read "Open The Gates" reviewed by Chris May

Irreversible Entanglements is the sort of band that gives poetry-and-jazz a good name. The third full-length album from the Philadelphia/NY/DC collective fronted by poet Camae Ayewa aka Moor Mother ploughs the same rich furrow as before: groove friendly semi-free jazz which dissects diasporic Black history and lays out future possibilities. The band's bloodline stretches back to such landmark releases as New York Art Quartet & Imamu Amiri Baraka (ESP, 1965) and Jayne Cortez's Celebrations And Solitudes (Strata-East, ...

Irreversible Entanglements: Who Sent You?

Read "Who Sent You?" reviewed by Gareth Thompson

Irreversible Entanglements first came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event in 2015, after the killing of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Who Sent You? is their second album and was released in March 2020, two months before George Floyd's death at the hands of police in Minneapolis. A five-piece collective, Irreversible Entanglements feature the voice and texts of Camae Ayewa, aka Moor Mother. An artist and activist from Philadelphia, her other works include the ...
