Mankwe Ndosi

Mankwe Ndosi is celebrated for a sound and practice that spans genres and disciplines: celebrating influences from Jazz and African legacies, Hip Hop and Soul, performance art, theater, public art and improvisation. She performs nationally and internationally and has appeared with Nicole Mitchell, Ballake Sissoko, Bridge #9, Sharon Bridgforth, Laurie Carlos, Ananya Dance Theater, Brother Ali, Atmosphere, and AACM stalwarts Douglas Ewart and George Lewis, and the acappella women's group the Give Get Sistet. Ndosi is a Culture Worker - using creativity to nurture human connection to each other, ancestors, and the earth.

Mankwe Ndosi is not a singer (more like a true vocal artist!!!) that was familiar to me, but she certainly is now. Her recording Felt/Not Said is strikingly different. She's from Minneapolis, not that far from Chicago, the home of the AACM, and that's where Ndosi set out to incorporate AACM influences to her African roots and hip hop and rap.
