Carlos

From a coast to another, Carlos was born and grew up in the Caribbean Coast of Colombia and he lives now in Malaga in La Costa del Sol in Spain where he has been performing with local artists like Drume Negrita, Virginia Alexandre, IFNA and Indian Grooveland. Currently he is also driving his own instrumental project performing the music from his first album “Sentido Común” with the Quartet formed along with Jorge Blanco, Dixon Leal and Nico Huguenin. Carlos is mostly self-taught in music and guitar, but he also learnt a lot from his fellow musicians in Barranquilla, CO, the city he was raised, and a very important guidance and influence from his great friend and teacher Rafael Barake.

His style could be defined within the extensive universe of fusion and contemporary jazz, although his has a wide range of influences, like rock, funk, alternative, RnB, pop, latin and brazilian.

For few years he was member in the worship band of Centro Biblico Internacional, one of the most important christian churches in Colombia, blessed with great music and versatility. He also participated in events like Barranquijazz Festival with his friend Fernando Olivo playing guitar and directing in bands Guaca Jazz and Almar Jazz. And he has been on important events in the city with christian music international artists like Samuel Hernandez and others, as well as he has collaborated with other artists on live performances and sessions.

Carlos Lyra (1933-2023)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Carlos Lyra, a Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist, and one of the fathers of the bossa nova who, with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Luiz Bonfá, Roberto Menescal and Ronaldo Bôscoli, among others, turned a new form of middle-class aspirational music into a global sensation, died in Rio de Janeiro on December 16. He was 90. In the same league as Jobim in terms of poetic lyricism and musical beauty, Lyra composed dozens of aching bossa-nova love songs that have ...

Backgrounder: Antonio Carlos Jobim's 'Wave'

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

The ever beautiful Getz/Gilberto may have been the album that popularized the bossa nova when released in 1964, but Antonio Carlos Jobim's Wave was, for me, its instrumental peer. Both albums were produced by Creed Taylor, the former on Verve and the latter on Creed's CTI imprint at A&M Records. This Jobim masterpiece was arranged by Claus Ogerman and recorded in 1967 on May 22, 23 and 24 and on June 15. Jobim played guitar, piano and harpsichord. Recorded at ...

Carlos Lyra: Além da Bossa

Carlos Lyra: Além da Bossa

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In the late 1950s, Rio de Janeiro experienced enormous optimism. North American trade was on the rise, and the advent of jet travel between Brazil, France and the U.S. boosted tourism. Business at the city's hotels, lounges and restaurants soared. Throughout Rio, a new form of music was stirring. It was more jazz-romantic and folk-centric than the whistle-infused samba. It also was intimate and expressive, and celebrated the sensuality and cool of the young beach crowd. When João Gilberto released ...
