Lech Wieleba

Doublebass player, composer. Born in Lębork (Gdansk), Poland; has lived since 1984 in Hamburg, Germany. • Studied double bass under Professor Stanisław Rosiek at the Frédéric Chopin Conservatory in Gdansk, Poland. • For four years was a member of the National Opera and Philharmonic Orchestras in Gdansk. Changes his musical path and becomes a jazz musician. • 1975 – Appears with the Don Cherry Band at the Jazz Jantar Festival, Gdansk. • 1980 – Wins the annual Krzysztof-Komeda Prize, Warsaw. • 1980 – Wins first prize at Jazz nad Odrą Festival, Wrocław. • 1980 – Appears at the Jazz Jamboree Festival, Warsaw. • 1982/83 – Co-founds the Instrumental Theater of Gdynia (Teatr Instrumentalny Gdynia); completes European tour. • 1984 – Settles in Hamburg, Germany. Records albums with Udo Lindenberg, Franz Josef Degenhardt, and Golden Bough. • 1980s, 90s – Ensemble member for numerous music theater and film productions. • Launches six-year collaboration with André Heller. • 1993–95 – Is named musical director of the Wintergarden Follies (Wintergarten Variétés), which tours Germany, Switzerland and Austria. He and his band accompany The Clark Brothers, tap dancers from New York’s legendary Cotton Club. • Composes the music for theater productions, including La Musica, book by Marguerite Duras, produced at the Theatron in Hamburg; and Chawale, produced at the Theater am Hechtplatz in Zurich. Composes the music for the television production The Outsiders (Die Aussenseiter), produced for ProSieben. • Conceives and stages concept shows based on his own compositions, including a lyrical-musical portrait of Mascha Kaléko, Sureste Tango, and Lech Wieleba POETIC JAZZ Concept (Slavic jazz). • World Premiere POETIC JAZZ SYMPHONIC with POETIC JAZZ & Polska Filharmonia Sinfonia Baltica, Słupsk, Poland. For the first time, compositions by Lech Wieleba have been arranged for both jazz quartet and symphonic orchestra. Appears at festivals: 2001 – 4th Kasseler Weltmusikfestival, Germany 2006 – Festival PianoForte!
