Album Description

Mystery Man is a natural follow-up to my prior album, Bop Boy. Bob Mintzer and Terry Clarke once again join me on this second endeavor for MusicMasters, performing two pieces each by Kenny Wheeler and Lars Jansson, and three compositions by Bob Mintzer. Also included are contributions by our bassist Mike Richmond, pianist Will Boulware, and Richard Rogers, whose classic piece, My Funny Valentine, serves as a duo vehicle for me and Bill Charlap. I believe the relationship between these musicians is quite significant. Bob Malach—a most wonderful tenor soloist—Mike Richmond, and I have been touring a great deal with the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band—which is where I also met and shared the trumpet section with Kenny Wheeler. Bob Malach and I are also members of the Bob Mintzer Band, which resides in NYC. Terry Clarke and I have played on a number of groups together of which pianist Bill Charlap is a member. So there are many connecting threads among this group, all of which I think contributes much to these performances. For these reasons and more, the making of Mystery Man was a great pleasure; and was a venture that brought many moments of fulfillment.
