Negative Press Project

Negative Press Project (NPP) is a jazz collective based out of Oakland, CA. NPP is one of the latest singular ensembles to emerge from the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, CA. “Versatility abounds, and they always look for new ground to explore," says The Bay Bridged. Co-led by bassist Andrew Lion and pianist/keyboardist Ruthie Dineen, the expansive electro-acoustic ensemble always brings a supple textural palette to their largely original repertoire. While the group remains focused on their roots in improvisation and committed to deeply inspired composition, they are constantly exploring the intersections of jazz, chamber, and rock music. The voices of Tony Peebles (Tenor Sax), Rafa Postel (Trumpet), Chris Sullivan (Alto Sax), Lyle Link (Alto & Tenor Sax), Luis Salcedo (Guitar), and Isaac Schwartz (Drums), imprint the music with a multitude of diverse experiences and sounds. The band released an impressive debut album See Evil Eyes | Civilize in 2015 focusing on original compositions. In 2017 they released their second album Eternal Life – Jeff Buckley Songs and Sounds, which received 4 stars from Downbeat Magazine. Their latest album, Within, was released in the summer of 2019, which was followed by their third tour of the Pacific Northwest. Negative Press Project compositions and performances continue to build on personal themes to the composer, as well as more universally that of income inequality, racial divides, and the ambiguities of privilege in U.S. society, as well as effects felt more locally throughout the SF Bay Area region.

The compositions are intricate, weaving together complex rhythms and melodies as each piece tells its own story, with the musicians' styles shining through, yet harmoniously blending to create a unified band persona. The band's standout feature is its ability to balance improvisation with structured composition amid jazz fusion, Afro-Cuban, West-African, classic West Coast “cool" and nods to the big-band era. The jazz influence is evident ...

Nevertheless his multi-octave voice and the ethereal rush of his songs have touched a lot of people. There's been a film and several books about him, several people have covered his ...
