Nicolas has played and/or recorded with numerous people including: Archie Shepp, Odean Pope, Bill Roye, Avery Sharpe, Mark Helias, Steve Pott, Michael Attias, Loren Stillman, Peter Van Huffel, Colmore Duncan, David Bryant, Jacob Sacks, Gerald Cleaver, Nicholas Sager, Danny Fisher, Take Toriyama, Ziv Ravitz, Kris Davis, Jeff Davis, Georg Vogel, Gunter Gruner, Daniel Carter, Salim Washington. In 2004 he recorded with drummer Matt Wilson on NBJ’s CD.
Like a piece of visual art, Nicolas' compositions contain tonal color, variety (of sound), texture and form. Each tune is also story that contains a beginning, middle and end. During live sets, the songs' order is chosen for auditory continuity. There are almost no breaks between songs so that transitions from one tune to the next maintain or change the story's mood.
