Upright and electric bass player from Stockholm, Sweden. Originally from Uppsala, Niklas has studied Jazz & Improvisation at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and at the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP).
Besides playing with many of Sweden's finest musicians - Gösta Rundqvist, Lina Nyberg, Fredrik Ljungkvist, Joakim Milder among others - he also runs the record label Maine Coon Productions, whose first CD “Cembra”, by Swedish piano trio Graden/Agnas/Fernqvist, is released in August 2012.
Influenced by a wide range of musical genres stretching from renaissance to contemporary classical music, New York jazz to soundtracks and through playful and creative interplay, Graden/Agnas/Fernqvist takes the audience for a mystical ride through time and space. Experience the village of Cembra in the Italian Dolomites and get acquainted with Ottmar, the party animal. Join the trio back to the 17th Century, the sibirian countryside and to the whereabouts of M r Gesualdo da Venosa. Also, lurking in the shadows, a large cat, the Maine Coon.
Pianist Johan Graden is alongside Graden/Agnas/Fernqvist also a member of the Swedish/Belgian LEKSAK, and a new group with saxophonist Joakim Milder amongs others. In a review (July 2012) Ystad's Allehanda wrote: ”Lyrical piano playing. Humorous and playful yet intellectual and thoughtful...” Drummer Konrad Agnas is also a part of Johan Christofferson Trio and Agnas Brothers. All three trio members frequently perform in different groups and constellations in the swedish and international jazz scene.
It's not often that a young Swedish jazz group captures the listener's attention
so completely as the trio Graden/Agnas/Fernqvist do on their debut album. (...)
One is struck by the contrasts, from the rampant and wild, to the delicate
melodies of 'Zarja'. It's full of expression and relaxation, with an imagination
that knows no genre limitations. And all well-worked in a dynamic interplay,
where the instruments appear on equal terms.
