Album Description

Take n° 1 Thank you Mr. Monk 4’39” R. Zanetti This piece is dedicated to T. Monk. I have spent many hours of study on this author, where I felt myself at ease listening to his language and pronunciation. Take n° 2 Speakeasy 4’42” R. Zanetti The title and sound of this take are meant to recreate the atmosphere of places called “speakeasy” at the time of Prohibition. Of course these places were secret sites where only confidential people could enter, using a password. There the atmosphere was a quiet one, they used to speak in a low voice and they could have a drink without being prosecuted by the law. Take n ° 3 Valvoline 4’49” R. Zanetti Valvoline was an oil brand used for the first internal-combustion engines. The persisting initial riff reminds you of the difficult ignition of the first tractors that were used in the endless farmland of the United States. Once ignited these engines could work for days long with no stop. This modal piece develops in 24 measures, where the harmony, in the solos, changes every 8 measures. Take n° 4 No Prohibition Unit 3’ 27” R. Zanetti, F. Calzetti I chose this track to title my disc. Its melody was created to describe the flight of a bird that steadily persevering goes to and fro its nest and collects material to build up its nest. The freedom in the flight of a bird is a perfect synthesis of the goals of this project. Take n° 5 Bloody Mary 4’42” R. Zanetti The famous cocktail invented in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition is often linked to the world of Jazz . Take n° 6 Outlaw 4’48” R. Zanetti The speed of this work, with all major harmonies and the initial pedal, bringing to mind Afro rhythms of the time, describes the flee of the outlaws that surreptitiously transported loads of alcohol. Take n°7 Invincibles 5’22” R. Zanetti This musical idea refers to the novel “Jazz Age” by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and to the cultural movement of the “ Roaring Twenties”. The popular melody in six-quarters reminds us of the sounds of the French musettes that in Paris typical boroughs could be heard. Take n° 8 Play it again Sam 6’18” R. Zanetti The title of this piece is taken from a very famous sentence said by Humphrey Bogart in the film “Casablanca”. The harmonic progression of dominant sevenths in the introduction once again recalls the influence that T. Monk has on my way of writing music. Take n° 9 Dow Jones 4’18” R. Zanetti With the collapse of Wall St. Stock Exchange in 1929 the Great Depression started. This is what I have tried to make feel in the first two phrases of the minor blues, where the melody creates a descending parabola that gives the sensation that everything is collapsing. Take n° 10 Chorale for Augusto 2’47” R. Zanetti The choral is dedicated to Augusto Tretti, a film director I knew, who died two years ago. He was friend to Mr. Federico Fellini and also his help in directing. Not much known by the great public, he was respected in the movie world. His major work are : Il Potere, Alcol e Mediatori e Carrozze. The introduction of the piano is here an intimate moment, the melody is a classic one, that of the Bach Chorals, where I have intervened just in its form to enrich it with a few substitutions of the tritones, typical of the jazz music.
