Omar J Correa

Omar J. Correa started out early in life with the destiny to be an artist. Having the talent for drawing and painting, he followed this path which eventually crossed with his love for music. Art being his first calling he underwent formal studies and has established himself as an original and respected painter.

Music was also a strong personal appeal, and so starting out first on the bongos and other percussion instruments, he quickly progressed on to the marimba and then the vibraphone, an instrument on which he is entirely self-taught.

Hailing from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico he has been active in local groups as the Jehovanisis (Gospel Choir Group) Manapeniel (Rock & Roll) The Majestic (Choral) and Sacred Jazz which was the islands first Christian Jazz ensemble. He has recently been a member of Sound Jazz, as well as leading his own Omar Correa Quartet.

Recognized in Puerto RIco area as the Artist Painter for his numerous portraits of jazz musicians, he is also very active in his family owned and operated radio station VID90, which is the only jazz oriented station on the island. And is the editor of VID90 Magazine, an online site spotlighting the Puerto Rican jazz scene.

Correa is the primary motivator, producer as well as participant of the Mayaguez Jazz Fest, which has over the last few years built up a steady and loyal following and is a premier showcase of local talent.

Omar Correa as well as continuing his art projects, is dedicated to the jazz community and has achieved much in garnering appreciation and recognition for the music and its musicians. Source: James Nadal
