Peck Allmond

Trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist and composer Peck Allmond has lived in Brooklyn, New York since 1993.

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, he was a product of Phil Hardymon's Berkeley High School jazz program - that also produced such luminaries as Benny Green and Joshua Redman. As a young player, Peck was mentored and hired by many SF jazz greats: Eddie Marshall, Mark Levine, Ed Kelly, John Coppola, Vince Wallace, Smiley Winters, Donald Bailey, Bud Spangler, Faye Carol, and Chuck Clark. Working with these masters was a rich jazz education.

At New England Conservatory he studied classical trumpet with Robert Nagel, and jazz with Fred Hersh, John McNeil, and Roswell Rudd. He has also studied with Charlie Haden, Dave Holland, and Steve Coleman. He has a BA in Music from UC Santa Cruz.

In New York City, Peck leads and composes for his own band, the Peck Allmond Group. In addition, he is an in-demand sideman on numerous instruments: trumpet, saxophones, flute, valve trombone and many other brass and reeds. He also plays kalimba, the African-derived thumb piano, to which he brings an unusual degree of virtuosity.

His jazz recording and performance credits: Oliver Lake, John Hicks, Billy Harper, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Tom Harrell, MeShell Ndegeocello, John Stubblefield, Joe Lovano, Cindy Blackman, Madeleine Peyroux, Donny McCaslin, and Peter Apfelbaum. In the pop world: James Brown, Rickie Lee Jones, Sean Lennon, Randy Newman, Ray Lamontagne, Wyclef Jean, Allan Toussaint, Zooey Deschanel, and many others.

Numerous television appearances include The Tonight Show, Saturday Night Live, the Conan O'Brien Show, Today, and the Mark Twain Comedy Awards. His compositions were featured by the late great Jackie McLean in Jackie's quintet.

The San Francisco Examiner: Peck is “...a magnificent trumpeter—and a forceful, post-bop modern saxophonist. The music he writes for his group is conceptually brilliant and marvelously played.”

Allaboutjazz.com: “[a] formidable talent.”

Jackie McLean: Peck is "a true triple threat: trumpet, saxophone, and composition."

Peck was the Traveling Trumpet Clinician for the Monterey Jazz Festival 2005-2017, and since September 2017 has been a woodwind instructor for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He teaches extensively at the New York Jazz Academy, and privately in the New York City area.

Blake is an improvising saxophonist who, because of his personal interests and the label he’s on, is often mistakenly relegated to the Worldbeat sections. To be honest, this disc only grabbed me halfway through, but when it did, it grabbed hard, and has sustained repeated listening.

The title cut, “Drift,” is echoed à la old ECM, and has lots of little percussion making the mournful tune very world-weary. Kimbrough, listed as playing only piano, is on an electric model. Scherr’s ...
