Pedro Cravinho

Pedro Cravinho (born October 07, 1968) is a Portuguese composer and double bass player. His range of interests encompasses experimental, contemporary composition, jazz and improvisation, and he has worked with a wide variety of groups and ensembles in Portugal. He also taught at Porto Jazz School. Born in Barreiro, Cravinho came to the fore as an improvising bassist as a member of a trio with pianist Pedro Costa and drummer Paulo Coelho, named JioTrazz. He also became an occasional member of several ensembles in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, he moved to North of Portugal to the city of Braga, at this time he create is own project as a leader “Pedro Cravinho Trio”, with the guitarist Budda and drummer Maconha. He has also formed a long-standing partnership with Dutch guitar player Richard Okkerse which led to a trio with drummer Alexandre Coelho. As a freelancer musician he has work mainly on theatrical music and poetry, he join the drummer Miguel Pedro in the electronic scene with free improvisation and they recorded the work “Jazziguanas” for Independent Label Cobra. Cravinho, in March 22, 2006, has founded the Association of Improvised Music in Braga, called JAM, this recent association is promoting the learning of improvised music and is taking several steps in the scene of Improvised Music in the North of Portugal.
