I have been continually blessed throughout my professional career with opportunities to compose or arrange music for an endless variety of performances and recordings. A gratifying consequence is that I have heard my works interpreted by some of the best players and ensembles in the world. Whether leading my own groups or completing commissions for others, I always immerse myself completely in the task at hand. It never gets old and I would be hardpressed to remember any times that I was not thoroughly fulfilled after a performance of my music. Throughout all, The Eleventet has been my passion. As of this recording, the ensemble has been on the scene for over thirty-five years! Although there have been a few lulls, The Eleventet has stayed active for the majority of that time, in different locales and always with top-rank players. From the early years in Boston, through brief periods in central Maine(!) and New York City, and now from our ongoing Philadelphia years, there is a long trail of performances and recordings—including some great bootleg recordings, many in my possession. In 2000, a little over a decade after my arrival in Philadelphia, I resolved to put together a permanent edition of The Eleventet and to establish a dynamic presence. Consequently, we have played at many notable locales and events, but it is through the longstanding residency at Plays and Players Theater in Philadelphia that I have solidified our recognition. The theater is a wonderful venue for outstanding and cutting-edge stage productions, and it also happens to be a hip location for live music. We have a wonderful relationship. In early 2017, I will direct The Eleventet in its one-hundredth performance at the theater! I have about 250 charts in the book now and, as long as I am able, I am not letting up. What a great ride it has been—and will continue to be! We WILL blow your faces off! Thank you, thank you, thank you—a million thank you’s—to the astounding, world-class members of The Eleventet! I love you all. You make both the music and the experience special beyond words. And a huge thank you to John Anthony, a brilliant engineer and my good friend.
